Tetsu Kariya and Akira Hanasaki’s long-running Oishinbo cooking manga series is receiving a new TV anime adaptation titled Shin Oishinbo. The new anime project was announced during a stage event at ABEMA Anime Festival 2026 celebrating Shin-Ei Animation’s 50th anniversary.

A premiere date, voice cast, staff, and animation production studio have not been confirmed, as of the time of writing.

The Oishinbo manga series, which is written by Kariya and drawn by Hanasaki, has been serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits magazine since October 1983. It has been in an indefinite hiatus since May 2014. A total of 111 tankobon volumes have been published in Japan as of December 2014.

The manga previously inspired a TV anime series from Shin-Ei Animation from 1988 to 1992, as well as two anime films from Studio Deen in 1992 and 1993, respectively. A live-action film adaptation was also released in 1996.

VIZ Media has released the Oishinbo manga in English under its VIZ Signature imprint as special Oishinbo A la Carte compilation volumes centered around a particular aspect of Japanese cuisine.

The manga’s synopsis is described by publisher Simon & Schuster as:

As part of the celebrations for its 100th anniversary, the publishers of the Tozai News have commissioned the creation of the “Ultimate Menu,” a model meal embodying the pinnacle of Japanese cuisine. This all-important task has been entrusted to journalist Yamaoka Shirō, an inveterate cynic who possesses no initiative — but also an incredibly refined palate and an encyclopedic knowledge of food.
