The Counterfeit Case of Ultra-30, the commemorative special for the Detective Conan anime’s 30th anniversary, is set to be broadcast on September 25, 9 PM JST as part of the Friday Road Show program. A teaser visual for the two-hour special, which is directed by Nobuhara Kamanaka (A Certain Scientific Accelerator and Detective Conan Police Academy Arc Wild Police Story, current Detective Conan co-director), was revealed as well.
Based on the manga by Gosho Aoyama, the still-ongoing Detective Conan (also known in English as Case Closed) TV anime began airing in 1996, with the first Detective Conan movie following the next year. Here’s the synopsis from Crunchyroll:
The son of a world famous mystery writer, Shinichi Kudo, has achieved his own notoriety by assisting the local police as a student detective. He has always been able to solve the most difficult of criminal cases using his wits and power of reason.
The Counterfeit Case of Ultra-30 (30-go Satsujin Jiken) sees Conan, the Detective Boys, Hiroshi Agasa, Ran, and Sonoko visiting the Printing Bureau’s Nagano factory amidst the issuance of a new 10 thousand-yen note design. When a murder case develops into something bigger thanks to the discovery of counterfeit money, Conan and Heiji find themselves heading to Osaka, which is believed to be where the counterfeits are being printed.
The Detective Conan manga started serialization in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday in 1994 and will release its 109th volume on October 16, 2026. Viz Media and Shogakukan Asia publish the volumes in English (the former using the Case Closed title).
Of the movies, seven including last year’s Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback, are among the top 100 highest-grossing films in Japan.
