The X/Twitter account of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series has announced a “special” collaboration with vocaloid Hatsune Miku. The post describes a “new project,” but further details will have to wait.

The Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series by Nagaru Tanigawa began in 2003 and has 13 volumes as of 2024. The titular character of the books, which are published under the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko label and illustrated by Noizi Ito, is an eccentric teenage girl who seeks the unusual, while being aware of her own reality-affecting powers and the extraordinary beings that observe her. Yen Press publishes the series in English.

A Kyoto Animation-produced TV anime series directed by Tatsuya Ishihara (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: A Lonely Dragon Wants to be Loved, Sound! Euphonium, Amagi Brilliant Park) with character designs by the late Shoko Ikeda (Sound! Euphonium) began airing in 2006. 2009 saw the start of a second series that had both the original 14 episodes and new content, including the episodes that made up the “Endless Eight” time loop arc. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya anime movie was released the following year.

Haruhi Suzumiya has also inspired other media like manga, including the spin-off The Disappearance of Yuki Nagato, which has a Satelight-produced anime adaptation, and video games.

As for Hatsune Miku, the Crypton Future Media-created vocaloid, whose voice is based on that of voice actor Saki Fujita, was first introduced in 2007. She has since inspired numerous games, merchandise, collaborations, and concerts. Following the Miku Expo 2026 North America tour earlier this year, the Miku Expo 2026 Europe tour is set to begin on November 12 in London and end on November 27 in Lisbon.
