Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is heading back to Japanese theaters. After ending its run on June 18, June 19 saw the announcement of screenings in MX4D, 4DX, SCREENX, ULTRA 4DX, Dolby Atmos, and other formats that will begin on September 18. Regular screenings will also resume.
The original anime movie was initially released on January 22 on Netflix and was one of the platforms Top 10 movies in Japan for some time. February 20 saw its theatrical debut via a limited theatrical run across 19 locations, which then received a small expansion in late February. The number of locations then increased to 100 in March.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! spent quite a number of weekends in the Top 10 Japanese weekend box office ranking, including its theatrical debut. In mid-May, it was announced that it had made more than 2.5 billion yen (~US%15.5 million).
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is a near-future yuri retelling of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, featuring elements of modern entertainment culture. The plot sees busy high school student Iroha Sakayori inadvertently becoming roommates with the extra-terrestrial Kaguya. Later, Kaguya becomes a streaming personality with Iroha as her producer, and their rise brings them into increased contact with Yachiyo Runami, the popular administrator of the virtual realm Tsukuyomi whom Iroha idolizes. At the same time, the spectre of Kaguya’s eventual return to the moon looms on the horizon.
Shingo Yamashita (Pokétoon chief director, opening storyboard artist and director for Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, and more) directed the movie in his feature film debut. Studio Colorido and Yamashita’s Studio Chromato were credited with the animation production.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is also available as a manga and light novel, with both published by KADOKAWA. In April, it was announced that the crowdfunding campaign for the movie’s online appreciation event had raised 4057% of its target goal. That month also saw the announcement of an update for the movie on Netflix involving the addition of the highly viewed “ray Cho Kaguya-hime! Version”” music video, which has animated footage set after the movie.
