Kyoto Animation has released a pre-broadcast trailer for its steampunk adventure Sparks of Tomorrow, which is premiering on July 5 on Japanese TV and Netflix. The new, less than 60-second look at the show includes some comedic facial expressions and serious confrontations, on top of more displays of the vividly realized alt-history setting, as characters scramble for the 20th Century Electrical Catalog that may bring about an age of Electricity.
Sparks of Tomorrow also received a third key visual and the title reveal of its ending song by Ginger Root. The ending song’s name is “Soarin’.”
Based on the 2018 light novel written by Hiro Yuki, Sparks of Tomorrow (20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku: Eureka Eureka) is directed by Minoru Ota (CITY The Animation Episode 5 storyboard artist and director) with series composition by Tatsuhiko Urahata (Baki Hanma, the upcoming GATE Season 2) and character designs and chief animation direction by Kohei Okamura (Free!–the Final Stroke– the second volume co-chief animation supervisor). Some of the other staff include world designer Takaaki Suzuki (DEAD DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION) and background art director Mao Takayama (Uji ni wa Monogatari ga Aru).
Yuma Uchida is playing Kihachi Sakamoto, who shared the dream of an “Age of Electricity” with his late bother. Sora Amamiya is Inako Momokawa, whose path crosses with Kihachi, while Koki Uchiyama is Yosuke Mizoe, who seeks the 20th Century Electrical Catalog.
Netflix’s description of the anime, which is part of Annecy 2026’s TV Films selection, reads:
Based on Hiro Yūki’s novel 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku and realized in a bold, impressionistic new vision from Kyoto Animation, the series follows a boy and a girl who dream of a life beyond the haze. But after losses upend both of their lives, any hope for a brighter tomorrow feels achingly out of reach. The boy has grown cynical since his brother’s death shattered their shared vision of an “Age of Electricity.” The girl, devoted in her faith, has learned to keep both her own dreams and her grief for her late mother carefully hidden away. Drawn together by the mysterious 20th Century Electrical Catalog and its tantalizing glimpse of all they’ve longed for, the two set out to uncover its secrets. Staring down their pasts together, the two begin to clear a path toward the future they once thought was gone — and push their smoke-choked world to the brink of a blazing revolution.
The light novel, which is illustrated by Kazumi Ikeda (Clannad character designer), was published under Kyoto Animation’s KA Esuma Bunko label and received an honorable mention at the 8th Kyoto Animation Awards.
