The official Twitter/X and website for the upcoming Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You TV anime adaptation has announced the two main cast members for the series. The anime is expected to premiere in Japan in 2026.
The anime’s main voice cast will be headlined by Takuya Sato as Sasaki and Seena Hoshiki as Yamada / Tamaya. Their casting was revealed in a recently released main cast promotional video.
The main staff and animation studio have not yet been announced. The TV anime adaptation was first announced earlier this past July.
Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You began as a Twitter webcomic by Jinushi on March 9, 2022, before receiving a serialization in Square Enix’s Big Gangan magazine on August 25, 2022. Seven physical tankobon volumes have been released as of July 2025.
Square Enix Manga & Books releases the manga series in English print, while Manga UP! Global releases it digitally on its app service. The latter describes the main premise as:
Meet Sasaki, an overworked, middle-aged office worker. His days are marked only by the passing of more unrewarding corporate drudgery. Smoking helps take the edge off, but other than that, the only bright spot of his day is when he goes to the nearby supermarket and sees Yamada’s smiling face. So, one evening after yet another exhausting day, he heads to the supermarket to find he missed Yamada’s shift. Dejected, he decides to go find a smoking area but discovers there isn’t one to be found. Just as he’s about to leave, a girl in a biker jacket named Tayama asks him to join her at a secret smoking area!
