GKIDS announced at its industry panel at Anime NYC that it will be bringing a new 4K restoration of Satoshi Kon’s psychological thriller anime film Perfect Blue to U.S. cinemas starting October 3, 2025.
The film’s screenplay was written by Sadayuki Murai (Millennium Actress, Kaina of the Great Snow Sea) and Madhouse was the animation production company.
Perfect Blue first premiered at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival in 1997, before premiering in Japan on February 29, 1998. GKIDS screened the film in both English subbed and dubbed in September 2018 and worked with Shout! Factory to release a new Blu-ray disc in North America in March 2019.
The anime film is based on Yoshikazu Takeuchi’s 1991 novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis, which was licensed for release in English by Seven Seas Entertainment.
GKIDS describes the main synopsis of Perfect Blue as:

Then “the other Mima” the pop idol who was supposed to have “graduated,” appears in front of her…
