Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s LW Entertainment, formerly known as The Really Useful Group, company announced this week that it is exploring potential opportunities for an anime adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera stage musical with Qubic Pictures and its founder Justin Leach.
Leach, who was a co-executive producer on Star Wars: Visions and executive producer of Netflix’s Eden and Leviathan anime series, provided the following statement on the new partnership with LW Entertainment:
I’m incredibly excited to join forces with the talented team at LW Entertainment to bring The Phantom of the Opera to life through anime. This project is a rare opportunity to unite the grandeur of musical theatre with the artistry of Japanese animation – two beloved traditions that have touched audiences around the world. Our goal is to create a timeless and emotionally resonant experience that speaks to a global audience and honors the legacy of this iconic story.
The new partnership between both companies has been announced to be part of a larger “series of new film and TV explorations around The Phantom of the Opera and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s other titles.”
Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera musical first debuted at London’s West End theater in 1986. Several shows have been produced since its debut, with the 10,000th show being celebrated in 2012 and its 30th anniversary being honored in 2018. A new North American production will begin touring starting November 2025.

The musical is based on French author Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel of the same name.
The official North America website for The Phantom of the Opera musical describes the main premise as:
It tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano – Christine, The Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, The Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide.
