The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle anime film has overtaken 2022’s ONE PIECE FILM RED to become the sixth highest-grossing movie in Japan.

According to the official Demon Slayer X (formerly Twitter) account, the first entry in the conclusive Infinity Castle trilogy earned 22,072,191,500 yen (~US$148.8 million) and drew a crowd of 15,698,202 moviegoers in its first 25 days. ONE PIECE FILM RED‘s all-time gross (without inflation adjustments) is around 20.34 billion yen.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle now sits directly below 2016’s Your Name in the all-time rankings.

Infinity Castle (Gekijoban “Kimetsu no Yaiba” Mugenjou-hen Daiisshou Akaza Sairai in Japaneseopened in 452  locations in Japan (including 59 IMAX locations) on July 18 JST, and will begin its international run this month (its North American premiere will be on September 12). The movie and its upcoming sequels adapt the final arc of the Demon Slayer story, where the Demon Slayer Corps’ engage Muzan and his demons a final time in the titular Infinity Castle.

The original Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga by Koyoharu Gotouge ran from 2016 to 2020 in Weekly Shonen Jump. Viz Media describes the manga as:

Learning to destroy demons won’t be easy, and Tanjiro barely knows where to start. The surprise appearance of another boy named Giyu, who seems to know what’s going on, might provide some answers—but only if Tanjiro can stop Giyu from killing his sister first!

The previous Demon Slayer movie, 2020’s Demon Slayer – Kimetsu No Yaiba – the Movie: Mugen Train, is Japan’s most successful movie of all time with a domestic gross of 40.43 billion yen. The TV anime’s first season premiered in 2019, and other entries include a TV broadcast version of Mugen TrainDemon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District ArcDemon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc.
