A new Cyborg 009 anime, titled Cyborg 009 Nemesis, has been announced.
The announcement was made on July 19 JST, which is commemorated as Cyborg 009 Day. It is also the 61st anniversary of the original manga by the late Shotaro Ishinomori, which started serialization in Shonengahosha’s now-defunct Weekly Shonen King on the same date in 1964.
The basic premise of the manga sees nine cyborgs escaping from the Black Ghost organization, which abducts humans and develops combat cyborgs for sale. One of these cyborgs is the titular 009.
Cyborg 009 has inspired various TV anime and movies, the first being 1966’s film of the same name. 2016 saw the debut of the Cyborg 009: Call of Justice web anime, the premise of which Netflix describes as:
Years after taking up normal lives incognito, the cyborgs are forced to fight again when the superhuman Blessed appear with a plan for humanity.
A novel trilogy titled Cyborg 009 Kanketsu-hen 2012 009 conclusion GOD’S WAR was released in 2012 and served as the conclusion to the Cyborg 009 story. It was based on manuscripts left by Ishinomori.
Tokyopop had published some of the manga’s volumes in English. Another attempt to reach English-speaking audiences came later via an Archaia-published graphic novel.
