The fifth installment of the Kingdom live-action film series will open in Japanese theaters in summer 2026. A “super teaser visual” and “super teaser video” for the new movie have been released.
Director Shunsuke Sato is back, as are scriptwriters Tsutomu Kuroiwa and Yasuhisa Hara (Hara is also the creator of the source manga). Actors Kento Yamazaki and Ryou Yoshizawa are returning as well.
The previous title, Kingdom: Return of The Great General, came out in 2024. The first movie was released in 2019, and the next two entries were released in 2022 and 2023.
Like the still-ongoing anime, the Kingdom films are based on the Warring States period-set manga by Yasuhisa Hara, which began in 2006 in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump and will release its 76th volume on July 17, 2025. Amazon UK describes the first film as:
An epic period drama based on Yasuhisa Hara’s best-selling manga of the same name. Set in China during the Warring States Period, the film tells the story of an orphaned peasant boy who encounters another boy destined to become the Qin emperor. Serving as the key general, the peasant fights on behalf of the king to unite China.
The Kingdom manga was the recipient of the 17th Osamu Tezuka Cultural prize. In December 2024, the series’ print circulation numbers passed 110 million copies. Viz Media has licensed the manga.
