Kazuya Aiura (Assassin’s Pride) is directing the anime series, with Deko Akao (Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp) as series screenwriter, Taro Ikegami (Legend of Mana The Teardrop Crystal) as character designer, and MONACA’s Ryuichi Takada, Keiichi Hirokawa, and Kuniyuki Takahashi as music composers. Yokohama Animation Lab is handling the animation production.
The series was originally scheduled to premiere in June 2024, but was delayed to March 2025.
The anime is based on the fantasy novel series written by Moto Nakanishi and illustrated by Tamaki, which was published by Futabasha from June 21, 2019 to November 22, 2023. Fourteen total volumes were released in Japan during its publication. The novels also inspired a 2021 manga adaptation by Yu Satomi and a stage play. Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed and released both the light novels and manga in English.
The Sword of the Demon Hunter novel series was initially published as a web novel in January 2013 on Arcadia, before also being released on Shosetsuka ni Naro. The web novel ended in October 2016.

HIDIVE is streaming the anime in select English-speaking countries and territories, outside of Japan. It describes the main synopsis as:
In the Edo period, there was a shrine maiden called “Itskihime” in the mountain village of Kadono. Jinta, a wandering orphan who, along with his younger sister Suzune, drifted into the village and grew up to become the shrine maiden’s guardian, ventures into the forest to defeat a mysterious demon who speaks to him of the far future and the threat of a Demon God. So begins this epic supernatural historical fantasy series that follows a demon hunter through his century-spanning journey from the Edo to Heisei periods — all-the-while questioning his wielding of a sword.
