The Summer South Korean Animated Film Casts Maaya Uchida & Mariya Ise in Japanese Dub featured image

The Summer, a South Korean animated film released in June 2023, is receiving a Japanese dub and will begin screening theatrically in Japan on August 15, 2025. 

The Japanese dub cast will star Maaya Uchida as Su-yi and Mariya Ise as Yi-gyeong.

Ji-won Han, who directed Netflix’s recent South Korean animated film Lost in Starlight, served as director for The Summer and wrote its screenplay. Red Dog Culture House was in charge of the film’s animation production. 

The film is a compilation of the original 2021 ONA series Geu Yeoreum, which consisted of seven 10-minute short episodes. 

The Animation is Film festival describes the main synopsis of The Summer as: 

Life in the countryside is quiet and mundane for bookish Yi-gyeong until an errant ball sends star athlete Su-yi crashing into her life. The connection between the two girls is instantaneous, and simmers until their mutual attraction bubbles up into love. But just as their feelings for each other start to make sense, Yi-gyeong’s ambitions for her future carry the couple into uncharted territory.
