Studio Khara has released a new CG short anime of Moyoco Anno’s Sugar Sugar Rune manga series, during a stage event at Japan Expo 2025. The short is titled SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières and serves as a prologue to Anno’s original manga, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 2005 TV anime series.
The short was presented at Japan Expo 2025 by CG animator Yusuke Matsui and Studio Khara producer Kohei Fujiwara, with the former announcing that a new anime adaptation of Sugar Sugar Rune is also now officially in production. The new adaptation will feature CG animation, as well.
Sugar Sugar Rune was written and illustrated by Moyoco Anno, which was serialized in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine from August 2, 2003 to April 3, 2007. Eight volumes were released in total. Del Rey Manga previously released the manga in English, but it was later licensed by Udon Entertainment, who published a new English volume in 2016.
The manga inspired a 51-episode TV anime adaptation from Studio Pierrot from 2005 to 2006.

Udon Entertainment describes the manga’s main synopsis as:
In the Magical World, the future queen is chosen by selecting two young witches and sending them to the Human World, where they’ll compete to capture the hearts of boys. Whoever has collected the most by the end of the competition is crowned queen. This generation’s Queen Candidates are best friends and polar opposites Vanilla Mieux and Chocolat Meilleure, the daughters of the current queen and her former competitor (respectively)
They’re aided by their assigned mentor and guardian, pop idol witch Rockin’ Robin, and their two animal familiars, Blanca the mouse and Duke the frog. But the girls have more to deal with than just competing for hearts at school. There’s something weird about the cool, mysterious middle school boy Pierre, who resembles the evil king Glace—and he seems to be after Chocolat. Now, both trapped within their own new goals, the two witches must fight their way and retain a friendship which no magic can defeat.
