Amazon Prime Japan announced last week that it will exclusively stream the upcoming CITY The Animation TV anime series on its Amazon Prime Video service worldwide.

The show’s newly launched official English Twitter/X account also confirmed that the anime will debut outside Japan on July 6, 2025 in “U.S. time.” Amazon also has a listing of the show on its website.

It was previously announced earlier this month that Amazon Prime Video would stream the series exclusively in Japan. The series will begin streaming and broadcasting in Japan on July 7 at 12:30 AM JST.

Taichi Ishidate (Violet Evergarden and Violet Evergarden the Movie, Nichijou assistant director) is directing the anime series, with Tamami Tokuyama (character designer and animation director on the 2021 “Souzou-hen” commercial) as character designer and chief animation director, Kana Miyata (Nichijou, Beyond the Boundary) as color designer, Shiori Yamazaki (“Souzou-hen” background art) as background art director, Hiroki Ueda (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S) as composting director, Tatsunori Kase (Sound! Euphonium Season 3 assistant 3D director) as 3D director, and Yota Tsuruoka (Nichijou, MONOGATARI Series OFF & MONSTER Season) as sound director. Kyoto Animation is handling the animation production.

CITY The Animation is based on the surreal comedy slice of life manga by Nichijou‘s Keiichi Arawi, which ran in Kodansha’s Morning magazine from September 29, 2016 to February 4, 2021. Thirteen tankobon volumes were released as of April 2021. The manga returned to serialization in the same magazine after three years on December 12, 2024.

Kodansha USA releases the CITY manga series in English, which was formerly released under its now-consolidated Vertical imprint. It describes the main premise as:

From Keiichi Arawi, the adored creator of Nichijou, this surreal-slapstick series revolves around a penniless college student, Midori Nagumo, who lives in an ordinary city filled with not-quite-ordinary people. And as this reckless girl runs about, she sets the city in motion.

Midori is in a bit of a bind. She is in debt, and her landlady is trying to shake her down for unpaid rent. Her best friend refuses to loan her cash since she’s wised up to her tricks. Maybe some bullying would help. Or a bit of petty theft? Neither is sustainable. Maybe getting a job would settle things… But working means less time for fun adventures in the big city…
