The new film is being advertised as the franchise’s first main 2D animated feature film since Lupin the 3rd Dead Or Alive in 1996. The Lupin films Koike previously directed were not feature length and were all spinoffs of Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine.
Other films of the franchise include the CG Lupin III THE FIRST in 2019, and the crossover films Lupin III vs. Detective Conan The Movie in 2013 and Lupin III vs. Cat’s Eye in 2023.
The Lupin III franchise, which features the exploits of the master thief Lupin III, started with the manga series, created by the late Monkey Punch, that ran in Futabasha’s Weekly Manga Action magazine from August 10, 1967 to May 22, 1969. A total of 14 tankobon volumes were originally released in Japan. Tokyopop licensed the manga for release in English. Seven Seas Entertainment would later release select chapters in omnibus book format in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

The manga has inspired a franchise that includes numerous manga entries, TV anime adaptations, films, and OVAs. The first TV anime series adaptation began airing in 1971.
Fujimi no Ketsuzoku follows Lupin and his friends searching for an elusive treasure on a mysterious unmarked island.
