More details about the recently announced SHUTEN ORDER game have been revealed, including its September 5 worldwide release date and its identity as a “multi-genre adventure game.” It was previously known that it will launch on Nintendo Switch and Steam.

The premise involves the murder of a leader of a religious organization called the Shuten Order, which occurs during a festival celebrating the founding of their own nation, Shuten. The amnesiac protagonist awakens to learn from two “self-proclaimed ‘angels'” that they are said founder, brought back through “divine power.” Unfortunately, the incomplete state of their resurrection leaves them without memories and with only four days to live.

“To survive, the protagonist must overcome ‘God’s trial’: identify and kill their murderer,” says the Steam page description.

Adding to the strangeness, the setting is described as a “world steeped in despair and chaos,” and the Shuten Order is “yearning for the end of humanity.”

SHUTEN ORDER‘s “multi-genre” label comes from the handling of its five routes. Aside from having different suspects, each route also plays differently. One is described as “Stealth Action Horror” with top-down “action-style gameplay” and puzzles, while another takes inspiration from escape rooms.

There’s also an investigation and mystery-solving route, a visual novel route with the ability to switch between multiple viewpoints “to discover survival routes,” and a dating sim route that requires you to win over three heroines. To get the final chapter, you’ll have to finish all five routes.

SHUTEN ORDER will have a Digital Deluxe Edition that includes a digital art book and a mini soundtrack. Additionally, the Switch version has an exclusive pre-order bonus in the form of the Kazutaka Kodaka-supervised novel Before the Murders case: Manji Fushicho. The story takes place five years before the game and follows the origins of the titular character, prior to her assuming the role of Minister of Security and earning the moniker “Queen of Heretic Hunting.”

Kodaka, perhaps best known for the Danganronpa series, is one of the game’s co-writers alongside Takumi Nakazawa and Takekuni Kitayama. The staff also includes simadoriru as illustrator and Masafumi Takada as music composer.

Neilo is the developer of SHUTEN ORDER, while Tookyo Games is credited with planning. Spike Chunsoft, Inc. is handling the international release of the game.
