Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist manga has joined WEBTOON’s catalogue. This full color and reformatted version launched on May 7.
Previously, the From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman manga adaptation was added to WEBTOON on May 2.
Fullmetal Alchemist was originally serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine from 2001 to 2010. WEBTOON describes the premise as:
After losing their mother to an illness at a young age, two young and talented alchemists, brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, attempt the forbidden act of human transmutation to bring her back. But little did they know there was a heavy price to pay for breaking the ultimate taboo in alchemy. Edward loses his left leg after the transmutation fails, and his only remaining family, Alphonse, is taken from him. Desperate to bring his precious brother back, Edward sacrifices his right arm in exchange for Alphonse’s soul and successfully binds him into a suit of armor. The brothers must now embark on a journey to regain everything they have lost.
The manga inspired two Bones-produced TV anime — a 2003 to 2004 adaptation directed by Seiji Mizushima and a 2009 to 2010 adaptation directed by Yasuhiro Irie. There are also two anime movies: 2005’s Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa and 2011’s Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos .
Beyond the anime, the manga has inspired games, live-action movies, and a stage play.
