Without pause, DAN DA DAN continues to dominate the 11th Anime Trending Awards by winning Opening Theme Song of the Year with “Otonoke” by Creepy Nuts. Taking home the Ending Theme Song of the Year award is 【OSHI NO KO】Season 2 with its heavy-rock rifts in “Burning” by Hitsujibungaku.
It is no surprise that Creepy Nuts appears twice in the running for Opening Theme Song of the Year. Both “Otonoke” and “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” have since taken the world by storm with their clever wordplay and electrifying beats, and their combined popularity may have contributed to votes dipping for The Dangers in My Heart’s opening “Boku wa…” DAN DA DAN’s opening maintained a 300-vote lead ahead of its competitor, while the MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES opening came up 100 votes behind — effectively flanking and robbing votes from the rom-com in the theme song awards.
DAN DA DAN premiered globally on October 4, 2023 on Netflix and Crunchyroll. Featuring a zany story about ghosts and aliens with equally zany animation sequences from Science Saru, DAN DA DAN’s opening,“Otonoke,” has 58M views on Youtube and over 167M streams on Spotify, and the non-credit version of the opening has accrued over 49M views in less than half a year.
Meanwhile, it’s a close tie between 【OSHI NO KO】Season 2’s “Burning” and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’s “Anytime Anywhere” for the Ending Theme Song of the Year. Unlike the fantasy anime’s recurring theme song that might be a main-stay for many anime fans, “Burning” is a grim reminder for 【OSHI NO KO】 fans that while the Tokyo Blade stage play burns with glory and fame via the opening, the lurking mystery of Ai’s murder has just been unraveled and begins to simmer forth once again through the ending. “Burning” managed to cinch Ending Theme Song of the Year with a 167 vote lead ahead of “Anytime Anywhere,” while KAIJU No. 8’s popular ending “Nobody” by OneRepublic unfortunately lagged behind in 3rd place with a total of 2,827 votes.
Previously at the 10th Anime Trending Awards, 【OSHI NO KO】snatched a total of seven awards, including the Opening Theme Song of the Year with “IDOL” by YOASOBI. The show started premiering globally on April 12, 2023 across streaming platforms, featuring a story that reflects the two-faced nature of the Japanese entertainment industry, spanning from idol groups to stage plays, and more.
