An audition to find the diva of the Sunrise-produced Macross anime will begin in Japan this month. It will use the new song “Ai to Ai” from FlyingDog and Lantis.

Applications for the Macross x Sunrise “Shin Macross” Choujikuu Utahime Audition 2025 (or Macross Heroine Audition) will be accepted from March 2 at 8 PM JST until April 30 at 11:59 PM JST. The audition is open to females aged 13 to 22 (using the Western age system, with April 1, 2025 as the determining date) who are residing in Japan, with those under 18 requiring guardian consent.

There will be three rounds of judging. The first looks at the required web submissions, including forms, Self PR, and a video with a performance of “Ai to Ai” that is uploaded to YouTube.

The second round will be an online affair that takes place sometime in late June, while the final round will take place in late July someplace in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The dates for these are tentative, and precise details will be revealed only to qualifying hopefuls.

The qualifying applicant will receive free singing, dancing, and acting lessons, and will partake in activities like live performances and promotional events in addition to singing for the anime.

The announcement of a Sunrise-produced Macross anime was made back in June 2023. In 2021, Japanese advertising agency Big West announced that it would release all Macross anime made after 1987 worldwide along with post-1987 Macross games, toys, live performances, and “other content and merchandising.” The shows are available on Disney+.

The first entry in the Macross anime franchise, which is known for its combination of mecha battles, singing, and love triangles, was 1982’s Super Dimension Fortress Macross series. This was later followed by 1984’s famous Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie. The most recent entry was 2021’s Macross Delta: ZETTAI LIVE!!!!!! movie, a sequel to 2016’s Macross Delta series which is set decades after Super Dimension Fortress Macross
