HIDIVE and Shudder are partnering with Iconic Events Releasing to screen the 40th anniversary re-release of Vampire Hunter D as part of this year’s AX Cinema Nights in U.S. and Canadian theaters this spring. A key art for the 1985 film and new theatrical trailer for the screening were also released.

Vampire Hunter D is the final entry of AX Cinema Nights’ 2024/2025 season, with HIDIVE and Shudder presenting a digitally remastered version that was produced by Sentai Filmworks in 2015. It will then be streamed on both platforms later this year, which are both owned by AMC Networks.

Both Japanese with English subtitles and English dub versions of the film will be screened at over 500 North American cinemas on April 9, 2025 (English sub), April 10, 2025 (English dub), and April 13, 2025 (encore dub screening).

AX Cinema Nights describes the synopsis of the film as:

In the year 12,090 AD, technology and the supernatural have overtaken the world, leaving the land desolate and despotic. The remnants of humanity are scattered into small communities and live in fear of vampires who compose the ruling Nobility. When Count Magnus Lee tastes the blood of Doris Lang, she is forcibly chosen to be his next wife. In an effort to escape her ill-gotten fate, she hires a mysterious vampire hunter known only as D, who comes from a peculiar lineage.

Vampire Hunter D was originally released in Japan as an OVA on December 21, 1985. Sentai Filmworks licensed the film for release in English in 2015 and released the latest Blu-ray disc for it in 2022. Streamline Pictures first released the film in the English language in 1992. Another anime film, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, was released in 2000.

Toyoo Ashida directed the film, with a screenplay written by Yasushi Hirano and a musical score by Tetsuya Komuro. Ashi Productions was in charge of the film’s animation production.
