Aoyama’s Yaiba manga was serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday from September 7, 1988 to December 1, 1993 and released 24 total tankobon volumes. The manga was the winning title of the 38th Shogakukan Manga Award Children’s category.

The manga, which has been licensed in English by VIZ Media, previously inspired a TV anime series from Pastel that ran from 1993 to 1994. The new anime will have Aoyama’s full supervision.

Shin Samurai-den YAIBA follows the journey of the titular Yaiba Kurogane, a young samurai boy training to be the best swordsman after being inspired by the real-life swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.
