Naoko Yamada‘s The Colors Within made US$373,811 in its opening US box office weekend (January 24 to 26), Box Office Mojo reports.

The anime film was screened in 570 theaters with English-subbed and dubbed options. It ranked 16th at the weekend chart.

The Colors Within‘s US opening performance is ahead of Yamada’s previous films. Box Office Mojo recorded a opening gross of US$121,732 for 2016’s A Silent Voice (which was screened in 51 theaters, according to Anime News Network). Meanwhile, 2018’s Liz and the Blue Bird had an overall gross of US$63,204 in the US.

The Colors Within premiered in Japan on August 30, 2024 JST (after missing its original fall 2023 release date) and has also screened in Southeast Asia. GKIDs previously announced that it will be made available in other regions like the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and more as well.

GKIDS describes the synopsis of the movie as:

Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the ‘colors’ of others. Colors of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a color she treasures as her favorite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most beautiful color of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practice at an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true ‘colors’?

The Colors Within was part of Annecy 2024’s feature film official selection and the Animation Golden Goblet Award winner at Shanghai International Film Festival 2024. It is the latest collaboration between Yamada, writer Reiko Yoshida (A Silent VoiceLiz and the Blue Bird, and The Heike Story), and music composer Kensuke Ushio (A Silent VoiceLiz and the Blue Bird, and The Heike Story). It is also the latest Yamada-helmed title to be produced by Science SARU.
