Kaori Miura (The Prince of Tennis, Tokyo Revengers musicals) is the play’s director and writer, with Satomi Toma as choreographer. Go Sakabe (Date A Live seasons 1-5) and KYOHEI are credited as the musical composers.

The musical began with a preview run in Japan at AiiA 2.5 Theater Tokyo from August 2018 to September 2018. It then played in Paris, France at the Palais des congrès de Paris later that year in November, as part of the Japonismes 2018 event. The show then had a brief opening run in Washington D.C. and New York in March 2019. It later opened in Taiwan in April 2023.
Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon manga series has inspired several stage productions since 1993, which include around 40 musicals and over 800 performances. Some of the most recent productions include 2013’s Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon -La Reconquista- to commemorate the manga’s 20th anniversary and 2017’s Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon -Le Mouvement Final-, in which the final performance in Osaka was screened in U.S. theaters in March 2018 and in Canada in April 2018.
Nogizaka46 idol group members also participated in a Sailor Moon stage musical that ran in Tokyo’s The Tennozu Galaxy Theatre in June 2018, and again at the TBS Akasaka ACT Theater in September 2018. Live Viewing Japan streamed the musical play in December 2021.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live comes after the success of Attack On Titan: The Musical last October, which played a sold-out, three-day run at New York City Center. The newest Sailor Moon play is part of a trend of “2.5D musicals,” which are based on popular manga and anime series and bring fictional characters to life.
