The next Mamoru Hosoda anime movie has finally been announced. Its title is Scarlet, and it will premiere sometime in winter of 2025.
The Studio CHIZU X (formerly Twitter) account also revealed a teaser image featuring a young woman with a cloak on her back and a sword by her side. The rest of her garb, and the baleful red mixed with the dark clouds above, gives the impression that Scarlet will be a medieval-style fantasy adventure. According to Variety, the story “centers on a princess who transcends time and space.”
Variety also reports that Sony Pictures will handle the global distribution for the film.
Meanwhile, Comic Natalie reported Hosoda as saying during Scarlet‘s announcement event that it is neither 2D nor a Hollywood-style CG animation. Its theme will tackle life and death, and there will be action and romance elements.
Scarlet immediately looks a far cry from Hosoda’s last film, Belle. That 2021 movie made technology its focus, with a virtual realm and communication through it being a major part of the movie.
Update: Added Hosoda’s descriptions of the film.
