Mononoke Dainishou: Hinezumi, the second installment of the Mononoke anime movie trilogy, has received its first trailer. A new visual was also released.

The preview confirms that the new film will continue to take place at the Ooku, with more rivalry between its inhabitants and a fresh supernatural threat. The concubines Fuki Tokita (Yoko Hikasa) and Botan Otomo (Haruka Tomatsu) appear to have a more prominent role this time around.

Mononoke Dainishou: Hinezumi is set to premiere in Japan on March 14, 2025 JST. The first movie, streamed by Netflix as Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain, debuted on July 26 JST this year.

Netflix describes The Phantom in the Rain as:

In the chambers of the Edo harem, two newcomers uncover political intrigue, rivalry and a vengeful spirit only one traveling medicine seller can vanquish.

The Phantom in the Rain, which was originally supposed to come out in 2023, was announced in June 2022 at the 15th anniversary event of the original Mononoke TV anime. The TV series is in turn preceded by the “Goblin Cat” segment of the 2006 horror anthology Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, which introduced the stylized look and supernatural horror-mystery premise that define the title.

Takahiro Sakurai was the voice actor of the Medicine Seller in the TV anime, while Hiroshi Kamiya plays the role in the films. Another major change between the TV anime and the films is the absence of the former’s character designer Takashi Hashimoto (Revue Starlight the Movie co-main animator, Fate/Grand Order THE MOVIE: Paladin: Agateram co-storyboard artist) in the production, although the credits acknowledge them as “original character designer.”
