Three Hayao Miyazaki image board collection books from Iwanami Shoten will be published in Japan starting this December.

The first two, Hayao Miyazaki Image Board Complete Collection 1: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Miyazaki Hayao Image Board Zenshuu 1: Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä) and Hayao Miyazaki Image Board Complete Collection 2: Castle in the Sky (Miyazaki Hayao Image Board Zenshuu 2: Tenkuu no Shiro Laputa), will be released on December 5 JST.

March 2025 will see the release of the third volume, which focuses on My Neighbor Totoro

According to the press release, the books’ replications of these pre-production illustrations hew closely to the original drawings. Size-wise, they are either exactly or close to the originals, with downsizing happening in cases where they wouldn’t fit into the 257mm x 350mm page.

The books will also include storyboards and new interviews with Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki.

Hayao Miyazaki Image Board Complete Collection 1: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind will cost 4,620 yen (~US$31.10) after tax, while Hayao Miyazaki Image Board Complete Collection 2: Castle in the Sky will cost 5,280 yen (~US$35.54) after tax. The page count is 108 and 136, respectively.

Other image board collections are planned to be released in the future. They will cover not just Miyazaki-directed titles, but films that he was involved in in other capacities such as Whisper of the Heart and Tales from Earthsea. Short form and early works like On Your Mark won’t be overlooked either.
