The visually stunning Mononoke: Karakasa anime film is coming to Netflix under the title Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain.

A firm release date has not been announced yet, with Netflix only saying that it’s “coming soon.”

Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain was released in Japan on July 26 JST. It was announced in June 2022 at the 15th anniversary event of the original Mononoke TV anime and was originally meant to be a 2023 release. The movie, which takes the yokai-slaying Medicine Seller to the inner palace (Ōoku), is getting two sequels, the first of which will premiere on March 14, 2025 JST.

Mononoke is a spin-off of 2006’s Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, which featured the Medicine Seller in its “Bakeneko” episodes. Takahiro Sakurai was the original voice actor of the character.

Crunchyroll describes the TV anime as:

In feudal Japan, evil spirits known as mononoke plague the countryside, leaving a trail of fear in their wake. One mysterious person has the power to slay the mononoke where they stand; he is known as the Medicine Seller, and he vanquishes the spirits using the power of his Exorcism Sword. In order to draw his sword he must understand the Form, Truth and Reason of the mononoke. Armed with a sharp wit, the Medicine Seller wanders from place to place, striking down the evil spirits in his wake.
