Voice actress Atsuko Tanaka, the talent behind characters like Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell (the Mamoru Oshii movies and Stand Alone Complex) and Caster from Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, has passed away at the age of 61.
Tanaka’s passing was announced by her agency Mausu Promotion on its website and by her son, the voice actor Hikaru Tanaka, on X (formerly Twitter). The younger Tanaka wrote that his mother died on August 20 JST, the same date as the announcement, after battling an illness for around a year. The name of the illness was not revealed in accordance with Tanaka’s wishes.
Tanaka was born on November 14, 1962 in Gunma Prefecture. Aside from Motoko and Caster, her anime roles include Flamme from Frieren: Journey’s End, Lisa Lisa from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Reiko Tamura from Parasyte: The Maxim, Bayonetta from Bayonetta: Bloody Fate, Sirene from Devilman Crybaby, Amida Arca from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, and Sister Jill from Cutie Honey Universe.
Tanaka was also active in video games and live-action dubbing. Her roles in these fields include:
