The upcoming Kamitsubaki City Under Construction anime has received a teaser trailer and visual, with the former including the song “The Witches” by V.W.P (-Virtual Witch Phenomenon-). Both have the tagline, “Go against fate.”
The core staff for the production was also revealed. Kodai Kakimoto (BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! director, Narenare -Cheer for You!-) is on direction and series composition duties while PALOW (Eve’s “Mob” music video co-concept artist) is the character designer. Soki Tsukishima (Ingress the Animation co-series composer and scriptwriter) is credited with the setting’s design, supervision, and original scenario. The animation production is handled by SMDE.
Kamitsubaki City Under Construction was announced in January 2024 and is slated for a 2025 release. The TV anime is part of Kamitsubaki Studio‘s Kamitsubaki City Under Construction “IP project” that started in 2019.
The project’s setting is the virtual Kamitsubaki City, which is home to five witches. The Kamitsubaki City Under Construction anime’s main cast consists of the members of V.W.P: KAF (as Kafu Morisaki), RIM (as Rime Tanioki), HARUSARUHI (as Haru Asanushi), ISEKAIJOUCHO (as Sekai Yorukawa), and KOKO (as Koko Rinne).
The first “story” of the project was 2021’s month-long alternate reality game Kamitsubaki City Under Construction Emergence. Since then, the setting has been split into multiple world lines with 2021’s Kamitsubaki City Under Construction Divergence project, and these alternate worlds will be reflected in three planned media releases: a novel (Kamitsubaki City Under Construction Chronicle), a tabletop RPG (Kamitsubaki City Under Construction Narrative), and a “dark-fantasy sci-fi visual novel” visual novel (Kamitsubaki City Regenerate).
Kamitsubaki Studio later announced Kamitsubaki Verse, which will unify the Divergence content and future projects. It describes Kamitsubaki Verse as “an endeavor to combine the Web3 experience—making new co-created experiences—with a variety of original IP projects we at KAMITSUBAKI STUDIO have developed to create entertainment in the unknown field of Web3.” Part of this endeavor is Kamitsubaki Resident Genesis, an NFT art project that is meant to allow one to “participate in the world of stories surrounding KAMITSUBAKI City and a wide array of projects developed by KAMITSUBAKI VERSE PROJECT.”
Kamitsubaki Studio describes itself as “a creative label and new-age artist management which produces cutting-edge internet culture with the next generation of creators” with the intent to “research and develop the future of IP and entertainment through the development of artists, original stories, future XR experiences, and metaverse development.” It has a music label, a story research and development division, a product development division, and a metaverse research and development division.
