1999’s Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie will be screened in Japanese theaters once more starting August 9 JST in commemoration of the anime film’s 25th anniversary.

As it was back in 1999, the new screening of Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie will include an anime short/music video titled CLOVER, which is also based on a CLAMP manga.

A trailer previewing the film’s premise, theme song (“Tooi Kono Machi de by Naomi Kaitani), and impressive animation was released by EMOTION Label.

Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie was originally released on August 21, 1999, a few months after the conclusion of the Cardcaptor Sakura: Clow Card TV anime that began in 1998. Like the series, Morio Asaka (My Love Story with Yamadakun at Lv999, Chihayafuru, My Love Story!!) was the director with Madhouse as the animation production company.

Crunchyroll describes the movie’s plot as:

It’s a lucky day when Sakura wins a trip to Hong Kong, but why are her dreams haunted by dark waters and a strange woman? There’s no time to enjoy her vacation, however. Sakura is hypnotized and led to discover both a watery phantom world, and the evil woman who inhabits it. But is this spirit as malicious as she seems, or does she burn with a desire for revenge? A tale of a love lost and spurned!

Cardcaptor Sakura began as a Kodansha-published manga by CLAMP, which ran from 1996 to 2000. A sequel to the magical girl series, titled Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, started in 2016.

After Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie, the anime continued with the Cardcaptor Sakura: Sakura Card TV series, which started its broadcast the same year. A second Cardcaptor Sakura anime movie was released in 2000 and had a revival screening in 2017. A Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card anime premiered in 2018 and had a sequel announced in 2023.

Kodansha USA describes the first Collector’s Edition volume of the original manga as:

Cardcaptor Sakura is one of the all-time classics of the magical girl genre, and the Collector’s Edition will be the definitive version of the story, for both long-time fans and readers new to the story. The adventures of the plucky Sakura Kinomoto are as adorably thrilling as ever, as she tracks down the magical Clow Cards and plunges headlong into a world of sorcery beyond anything she could’ve imagined.

Aside from Asaka, the staff lineup for Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie included:

• Character designer: Kunihiko Hamada (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, My Love Story!!)
• Guest original character designer and costume designer: CLAMP
• Screenwriter: CLAMP’s Nanase Ohkawa (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card series composer and scriptwriter)
• Art director: Katsufumi Hariu (Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Punch!)
• Director of photography: Hisao Shirai (Pokémon the Series: XYZ)
• Music composer: Takayuki Negishi (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, Mnemosyne)
• Sound director: Masafumi Mima (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, Attack on Titan Final Season, My Hero Academia)
