Grendizer U is coming soon. A second trailer for the anime has been released, and it reveals that the show will begin airing this July, while also previewing the opening theme song “Kaishin no Ichigeki” by GLAY.

Grendizer began in the 70s with the Toei Animation-produced TV anime UFO Robot Grendizer Raids, which ran from 1975 to 1977 with 74 episodes. Co-created by Go Nagai and Dynamic Pro, it took place in the same setting as earlier Nagai co-creations Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger

After its debut, the Grendizer robot also made appearances in titles like UFO Robot Grendizer vs. Great Mazinger and Grendizer, Getta Robot G., Great Mazinger: The Decisive Battle! Huge Sea Animal. While the original series was airing, a manga version was serialized from 1975 to 1977 in TV Magazine. Nagai was in charge of its first eight chapters, while Yuu Okazawa (Mobile Suit Gundam manga [Bouken Ou version]) was involved for chapters 9 to 18.

The Grendizer U website describes the plot as:

A man who fell into the desert has no memory. He was picked up by Koji Kabuto and named Daisuke. While the days seem to be peaceful, an unidentified phenomenon appears in the skies above the world’s major cities. It was Vega Star, a military force from a star system far away from Earth. Humanity is overrun by Vega, which is far superior to Earth’s weapons. Mazinger Z soars above the pool of water, Earth’s last hope faces an uphill battle against saucer beasts. In the midst of this desperate situation, a legendary hero appears out of dust. Riding on board is Daisuke, who turns out to be Duke Fleed, the prince who was forced to flee his home, planet Fleed…
