The Mahjong Soul mobile and PC game has received an animated trailer to celebrate its 5th anniversary in Japan.
The three-minute-plus trailer serves as a short film following four friends who share a love for the game. Becoming working adults affects their multiplayer sessions, but their friendship manages to endure, and they finally meet up for the first time in a while at the end of the video. The song that plays throughout is “Hitorijanainda” (“Not Alone”) by Kohana Lam.
FLAT STUDIO’s asano66 (Ichiban Chikakute Tooi Hoshi co-character designer and unit director, “Tentai Kansoku”) directed the Mahjong Soul anniversary trailer and also did the storyboards, character designs, unit direction, chief animation direction, and some of the key animation. MANAA ANIMATION, an animation team within FLAT STUDIO, is credited with the animation production.
Some of the other staff include Miyuki Ono as scriptwriter, Suiren Akitsuki (Futaribun no Shoumei and “Tentai Kansoku” background artist) as color designer and co-background artist, ATMOSPHERE’s Takeshi Yanagisawa (“Tentai Kansoku” background artist) as art director, and Sanshiro Sato (“Kuuhaku Byousha,” Futaribun no Shoumei and “Tentai Kansoku” assistant compositing director) as compositing director.
The voice cast includes Nobunaga Shimazaki, Aya Yamane, Junya Enoki, Junta Terashima, Yosuke Adachi, Sho Fujisawa, and Joichiro Ohtsuki.
Mahjong Soul was first released in China in 2018. Yostar publishes it in Japan. The App Store describes it as a “blend of cute, appealing anime characters with classical Japanese Mahjong!” Some of the Japanese voice actors who lend their voices to the game include Maaya Uchida, Mariya Ise, and Yuuki Ono.
An original net animation, Mahjong Soul Kan, started streaming this month.
