NHK has dropped a trailer and key visual for the Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai anime adaptation, which begins airing this April. Its main cast and staff were also revealed.
Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai is directed by Yoshiaki Kyougoku (Laid-Back Camp Season 1-2, Laid-Back Camp movie) at Pierrot with Yukiko Yamamuro (Parasite in Love screenwriter) as series composer, Takumo Norita (Break Blade) as character designer, and Eishi Segawa (Ushio to Tora) as music composer. The main cast members are Mutsumi Tamura as Yukiya and Miyu Irino as Wakamiya.
Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai (A Crow Does Not Choose Its Master) is based on the fantasy novel by Chisato Abe, which is the second installment of their Yatagarasu series. The books take place in the world of Yamauchi where dominance is wielded by a clan of the titular Yatagarasu race. In Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai, the Yatagarasu Yukiya gets embroiled in Imperial Court intrigue after he is chosen to be the attendant of an imperial prince.
The Yatagarasu series started in 2012, while Abe was in university, and led to Abe becoming the youngest recipient of the Seichou Matsumoto Prize. The first part of Yatagarasu ended in 2017, and the first volume of Part 2 was released in 2020. The first two volumes of the series have inspired manga adaptations by Natsumi Matsuzaki.
