Manga artist Naoshi Arakawa‘s latest manga, Orion on the Board (Banjou no Orion), has begun serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. The new series debuted in the magazine’s 2024 sixth issue (released on January 10 JST).

Orion on the Board is set in the world of shogi. It follows teenager Yuuhi Ninomiya, a prodigy who is currently on a severe losing streak. His 17th defeat comes at the hands of his rival Kanata, who possesses a 27-win streak in contrast. A dejected Yuuhi is brought to a bar where he has a fateful encounter with Tsuki, a girl with incredible skill in shogi.

Arakawa is perhaps best known for 2011’s Your Lie in April (Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso), a music-themed teen romance drama that inspired a TV anime series and a live-action movie. Their Sayonara Football (2009) manga was adapted into the Farewell, My Dear Cramer: First Touch anime movie while its sequel, Farewell, My Dear Cramer (Sayonara Watashi no Cramer, 2016), received a TV anime series. In between Farewell, My Dear Cramer and Orion on the Board, Arakawa drew the fantasy action title Atwight Game.
