A fifth season of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? has been announced as one of the light novel series’ 10th anniversary projects. A teaser visual and trailer for the anime sequel were also released.
The J.C.STAFF-produced Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (or Danmachi) anime adaptation began back in 2015 and aired its fourth season from late 2022 to early 2023. The light novels, written by Fujino Oomori and illustrated by Suzuhito Yamada, started publication in January 2013 under SB Creative’s GA Bunko label.
Yen Press describes the first volume as:
In Orario, fearless adventurers band together in search of fame and fortune within the monstrous underground labyrinth known as Dungeon. But while riches and renown are incentive enough for most, Bell Cranel, would-be hero extraordinaire, has bigger plans. He wants to pick up girls. Is it wrong to face the perils of Dungeon alone, in a single-member guild blessed by a failed goddess? Maybe. Is it wrong to dream of playing hero to hapless maidens in Dungeon? Maybe not. After one misguided adventure, Bell quickly discovers that anything can happen in the labyrinth–even chance encounters with beautiful women. The only problem? He’s the one who winds up the damsel in distress!
The Danmachi light novel series spans 19 volumes as of September 2023. Beyond the main light novels and anime series, there are light novel spin-offs, various manga, and an anime movie. One of the spin-offs, Sword Oratoria, received its own anime TV series in 2017.
Since the second season, the anime series has been directed by Hideki Tachibana (H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~). Shigeki Kimoto is the character designer, while the series composition is handled by Hideki Shirane (with Oomori joining for the fourth season). Some of the notable cast members include Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Bell Cranel, Inori Minase as Hestia, Saori Oonishi as Ais Wallenstein, and Saori Hayami as Ryu Lion.
