The respective Twitter accounts for both The Eminence in Shadow and Overlord have released a new collaboration chibi spinoff crossover anime to celebrate the Halloween season. The anime was uploaded to Kadokawa’s YouTube channel and a visual was also previously released.
The collaboration is a special crossover episode between the Ple Ple Pleiades (Overlord) and KAGE-JITSU! (The Eminence in Shadow) short anime series. The crossover between the two series was originally teased as an April Fool’s joke earlier this year.
The second season of The Eminence in Shadow will run for a total of 12 episodes. Its first season premiered on October 5, 2022 and aired for 20 episodes. HIDIVE is currently streaming the anime outside of Japan.
The anime is based on the isekai light novel series by Daisuke Aizawa with illustrations from Azunishi, which was first published by Kadokawa on November 5, 2018. Six volumes have been released as of October 30, 2023. The light novels also inspired a manga adaptation in 2019 and another spinoff manga in 2020.
Yen Press releases both the light novels and manga adaptation in English, describing the main story as:
Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind…or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one! And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest. Armed with his overactive imagination, Cid jokingly recruits members to his organization and makes up a whole backstory about an evil cult that they need to take down. Well, as luck would have it, these imaginary adversaries turn out to be the real deal-and everyone knows the truth but him!
The Overlord anime series began in 2015, with its most recent fourth season premiering on July 5, 2022.

The series began as a web novel on Arcadia in 2010 and was published on Shousetsuka ni Narou until 2012. It is written by Kugane Maruyama with illustrations by so-bin and was first published by Kadokawa on July 30, 2012. Sixteen volumes have been released as of July 2022. The light novels also inspired a manga adaptation in 2014.
Crunchyroll streamed the Overlord anime outside of Japan and describes the anime as:
When a popular MMORPG is scheduled to be shut down permanently, veteran player Momonga refuses to log out. As NPCs begin to develop personalities and minds of their own he decides to put his skills to use as the game’s new overlord.
