An “experiential” manga exhibition from Sony called MANGA in New York is set to be held at New York’s Studio 525 from October 27 to November 5. The exhibition will feature six original manga titles as well as the implementation of some of the company’s proprietary technology in order to create an “immersive experience.”
The “experiential” and “immersive” aspects of the MANGA in New York exhibition come from the utilization of Sony’s Tensor Valve™ “odorant control technology” and the installation of its Haptics-equipped Active Slate in the venue’s floor, essentially creating a 4D-like experience. Sony says that the former “links ‘scents’ to the MANGA’s story.”
The manga that will be displayed at the exhibition are also connected to the Sony brand, with the works being based on the company’s purpose and values (Pioneer, Dreams, Diversity, Creativity, Curiosity, and Sincerity). The six titles are:
• UEDA & SASAMI by illustrator Hikaru Ichijo
• Walkers by Katsuya Terada (Blood: The Last Vampire character designer)
• The Pilgrim’s Guide to Video Games by artist Takakurakazuki
• A Guide by Masanobu Hiraoka (Chainsaw Man ED 9 storyboard artist and director et al.)
• interlude by Miku Masuda (Moshi Suki to Ittara Kimi wa Warattekureru no Kana)
• DREAM PILL by creator group millennium parade
In addition to the exhibition, there will be a Picture Piecing Animation Workshop by Hiraoka on October 28 and a live drawing session by Terada on November 4. A “MANGA-CAN” vending machine stocked with original label canned drinks, which have scenes from the six featured manga as part of their designs, will be set up at the venue as well.
The MANGA in New York exhibition is part of the Ginza Sony Park Project, which is described as a “project for the renovation of the Sony Building, with three aims: to create a new hub for Sony brand promotion, offer people interactive new experiences, and make Ginza a more comfortable town.” The Ginza Sony Park was opened from 2018 to 2021 and is currently closed to enable the construction of the “New Ginza Sony Park,” which will open its doors in 2024.
More details about the exhibition can be found on its website.
