Earlier last week, Viz Media revealed that it is launching a new one-shot submissions portal in the United States, as part of its Viz Originals initiative. The new platform aims to produce short original one-shot stories created by writers based in the U.S.
Hisashi Sasaki, a former editor-in-chief of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, will work with and guide creators whose submissions are selected, with Viz Media digitally publishing the successful one-shots. This may also lead to the company licensing and establishing an official intellectual property to turn the story into an anime, and produce consumer related products.

Viz Media launched the Viz Originals graphic novel imprint in 2019 as a way to collaborate and encourage manga-inspired creators to develop original stories.
Some works that have been launched under the Viz Originals line include Betwixt: A Horror Manga Anthology, Devil’s Candy, The Girl That Can’t Get A Girlfriend, World Piece, and a manga adaptation of Rainbow Rowell’s novel Fangirl.
