A new main visual and PV trailer have been released for the upcoming Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window anime film, which is scheduled to be released in Japanese theaters on December 8, 2023.

The 90-second trailer also previews the film’s main theme song “Ano ne” by singer-songwriter Aimyon

Shinnosuke Yakuwa (Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Getsumen Tansaki) is the film’s director and co-screenwriter with Yousuke Suzuki (Komi Can’t Communicate planning assistant) as co-screenwriter, and Shizue Kaneko (How Not to Summon a Demon Lord Omega) as character designer. Shin-Ei Animation is in charge of the animation production for the film.

Meanwhile, the voice cast is headlined by child actress Liliana Oono as the lead heroine Totto-chan, Kouji Yakusho as Mr. Kobayashi, Shun Oguri as Papa, Anne Watanabe as Mama, and Karen Takizawa as Miss Oishi.

The anime film adapts Tetsuko Kuroyanagi’s series of memoir articles that were originally published in Kodansha’s Young Woman magazine from February 1979 to December 1980. The articles were then compiled into a book, which sold more than five million copies before the end of 1982.

An English edition of Kuroyanagi’s memoir was translated by Dorothy Britton and released in the U.S. in 1984. The book has been translated and released in many different languages around the world since its initial English release.

Kodansha USA releases Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window in English and describes the book as:

This engaging series of childhood recollections tells about an ideal school in Tokyo during World War II that combined learning with fun, freedom, and love. This unusual school had old railroad cars for classrooms, and it was run by an extraordinary man-its founder and headmaster, Sosaku Kobayashi–who was a firm believer in freedom of expression and activity.

In real life, the Totto-chan of the book has become one of Japan’s most popular television personalities — Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. She attributes her success in life to this wonderful school and its headmaster.
