The Ayase/ YOASOBI YouTube channel has released a music video for “Yuusha,” the opening song for the new Fall 2023 anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, with the timing more or less matching the show’s Japanese premiere on NTV’s Friday Roadshow program block.
Aside from allowing YOASOBI fans or those interested in the show to listen to the full version of the song, the music video also treats listeners/viewers to over three minutes of beautiful visuals. The video is storyboarded and directed by Keisuke Hiroe, who previously lent his touch to the also-gorgeous opening sequence of the recent My Happy Marriage anime. Other staff include:
• Animation director: Maru Takase (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End design works [co-credit])
• Art director: Yukiko Maruyama (Dead Mount Death Play)
• Color designer: Harue Ohno (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, A Place Further Than the Universe)
• Compositing director: Akane Fushihara (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Spy x Family)
The anime edit version of the song can be also heard thanks to TOHO’s release of the anime’s opening animation.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is based on the Shogakukan-published manga written by Kanehito Yamada and drawn by Tsukasa Abe, which was the grand prize winner of Manga Taisho 2021. Crunchyroll, Muse Asia, and Bilibili are some of the sites streaming the show, which has a special two-hour premeire, overseas.
Viz Media describes the manga’s premise as:
Decades after their victory, the funeral of one her friends confronts Frieren with her own near immortality. Frieren sets out to fulfill the last wishes of her comrades and finds herself beginning a new adventure…
The anime is produced by MADHOUSE with Keiichirou Saitou (Bocchi the Rock!) as director, Tomohiro Suzuki (One-Punch Man) as series composer, Reiko Nagasawa (takt op.Destiny) as character designer, and Evan Call (Violet Evergarden) as music composer. The cast includes:
• Atsumi Tanezaki as Frieren
• Nobuhiko Okamoto as Himmel
• Hiroki Touchi as Heiter
• Youji Ueda as Eisen
• Kana Ichinose as Fern
• Chiaki Kobayashi as Stark
