Ryo Saeba’s new theatrical adventure, City Hunter the Movie: Angel Dust, took the top spot in the September 8 to 10 Japanese weekend box office ranking with a moviegoer count of 211,000 and a gross of 325 million yen (~US$2.22 million). The movie had its premiere on September 8.
City Hunter the Movie: Angel Dust is the latest anime film in the franchise since 2019’s City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes. The plot involves a new version of the Angel Dust drug, which is being manufactured at the behest of a mysterious organization to create super soldiers. The Sunrise and The Answer Studio-produced title is directed by Kenji Kodama (City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes) and stars Akira Kamiya as Ryo, Kazue Ikura as Kaori, and Miyuki Sawashiro as Angie.
The second highest-ranking anime movie on the weekend chart is Hayao Miyazaki‘s The Boy and the Heron at sixth place, marking a slight drop from its fifth-place ranking last weekend. The film, which had scarcely any pre-release promotion in Japan, debuted on July 14 and is now nearing a total gross of 8 billion yen (~US$54.6 million). Hitting that amount will make it the 80th highest-grossing movie in Japan, tied with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
The Shin Jigen! Crayon Shin-chan The Movie Chounouryoku Daisensou ~Tobe Tobe Temakizushi~ 3DCG movie, which premiered in Japan on August 4, placed 10th.
Another noteworthy weekend top 10 title for anime/manga fans is Kingdom: Unmei no Honoo, the third live-action adaptation of Yasuhisa Hara‘s Warring States period-set manga. The film placed seventh and has made over 5.1 billion yen (~US$34.8 million) in total since since premiering on July 28.
